醫學的物質文化──歷史的考察計畫　Catelijne Coopmans教授【專題演講】

講　題：From Data to Insight: The Rhetoric of Visual Analytics
摘　要：

The ever-growing amount of digital data in the world has posed new challenges for data analysis, at the same time as it has raised expectations of data as a source of latent insight. Scientists, financial analysts, business people, artists and members of the general public have become increasingly interested in coaxing data into visual patterns to reveal salient trends and relationships. In this paper, I examine how investment in data visualization as a discovery practice is created and sustained. Specifically, I analyze how the relation between seeing and knowing is articulated in a set of online seminars in which experienced users of a data visualization software package show how they have obtained insights from their data. I characterize what happens on these occasions as “artful revelation”: on the one hand (“revelation”), the webinars convey the impression that insights inhere in data and can be visually apprehended, on the other (“art”) they render such insights conditional and elusive. The paper concludes by proposing that the tension entailed in artful revelation is generative and rhetorically powerful, and by arguing for the importance of attending to such rhetoric if we wish to understand the mutual shaping of epistemic practices and visualization technologies in the digital age.
