自從上帝摧毀巴別塔（Babel）之後，溝通就一直是人類的問題。因此西方傳教士重譯來華，只為傳播上帝的福音；而我則逡巡於各地的圖書館，找尋十七、八世紀中西文化接觸失落的踪跡。

評價文化接觸的經驗不是我關心所在；恰如我一點也不關心中國接納西方科技的成敗。我只著重歷史主體如何將他們在文化接觸中所獲得的知識、技術藉由具體的行動，表達他們所知所信，從而塑造了知識、技術和自身存在的意義。因此，我討論「科學史的史學史」，以理解十七、八世紀的行動者如何透過書寫自然知識的歷史，重構西學與中國傳統自然知識間的關係。我分析歷史行動者在面對異文化時，如何挪用不同的文化資源，融合不同的文化因子，創造自我的敘事，肯定自身的存在意義。我探討新物質的創造與引進，以理解物品如何直接影響人們的互動與生活；討論人群互動如何銘刻在物品上，使物品成為見證人群互動的遺跡。

也許這種看來純知識的追求是無能寫出有效歷史（effective history）的託辭；但也許描繪歷史的殊異性，會成為批評當代文化的鏡子，從歷史細節顛覆現代人自身的存在。

未來的計畫乃現在想法的實踐。我手上打算著三本書：（一）《十七、八世紀中國的曆算學》，探討歷史行動者如何在中國的權力場域中，一步步轉化西學的內容與意義，使之符合中國的文化狀態，進而將西方曆算學納入中國的曆算傳統。（二）《明清之際的天主教醫學》，考察明清之際藉由天主教所傳入的醫學知識如何深植於當時中西雙方的宗教與政治脈絡中，以明用現代科學的觀點，無以全然理解中國和西方有關自然的知識史。（三）《符象天堂》，以馬若瑟（Joseph de Prémare, 1666-1736）的中文文獻為中心，探討他如何以「符象論」（Figurism）的立場利用中國典籍處理文字起源、詮經學與禮儀之爭等問題。

歷史學者有著西齊弗斯（Sisyphus）的宿命，既無能一窺歷史全貌，只有孤獨地從文獻中重砌巴別塔，以徒勞紀念自己的生與死。
